"Front-end" or "client-side" development is often confused with simply design. Although we provide both web design (see further on) and front-end development services there is a substantial difference between the two. The design for a website can be done by a graphic designer just like the pages in a magazine or a billboard if you like, the implementation of the design and changing it into something that works in a "client" such as a web browser is a different matter.

Front-end development requires knowledge of scripting languages such as html or JavaScript to create scripts that a web browser understands to display information in the form of interfaces or web pages that interact with the final user. These scripts should render correctly in all platforms connected to the internet, whether a mobile phone, an i-pad or a desk-top computer. At AVDL we create these scripts or more often write (back-end) programmes that generate them.

If you are shopping for a website we will most probably built the design of your website around the information you want to display. Quite often our clients already work with, or employ their own graphic designers and we will closely work together with them to create quality web pages.

If you are a designer we can take your design and faithfully reproduce it in valid xhtml/CSS from PSD or any other format. As mentioned in our web standard pages, everything we produce is "cross-browser" and complies with W3C standards. We can also advice you in fields such as usability and information design.

+ Back-End Development

"Back-end" or Server-side development is the programming done on the web server. Basically it is the process of writing programmes that generate the scripts to send to the "client" or web browser. In contrast to client-side scripts, server-side programmes are not visible to the client. On request they make information available from the server.

There are many different programming languages available for server side scripting and at AVDL we concentrate mainly on a combination called LAMP which stands for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP (read our expertise section for more information).
Back end development is necessary to create dynamic web pages which interface with the information stored on the server, usually in a database.

Combining both front and back end scripting enables us to create powerful web sites and web applications for a nearly infinite amount of purposes. Whereas before the existence of the internet, software was usually distributed and installed locally on every computer, nowadays we can centralize programmes and information and access both from anywhere in the world.
